As an active ingredient in pharmaceuticals, CBD must be dispersed into nanoparticles to be effectively absorbed and exert its medicinal effects. CBD is hydrophobic and therefore must be dispersed in an aqueous solution with high shear strength. Ultrasonic homogenizer dispersion is considered the most effective method for preparing CBD emulsions due to its versatility in handling various solution types and its stable emulsification effect.
To prepare CBD nanoemulsions, an appropriate amount of CBD must be added to glycerol, coconut oil, or a mixture of water and oil. It is then treated with an ultrasonic emulsifier until the solution is translucent or transparent. Typically, translucent CBD is dispersed below 100 nm, while transparent CBD is dispersed below 60 nm. Ultrasonically treated translucent or transparent emulsions can maintain a self-stabilized state for extended periods, significantly reducing the amount of emulsifiers or surfactants required.
